She Says… Merry Christmas to ME

I’m feeling very Christmas-y today. Owen and I danced around to Christmas music yesterday and it got me in the holiday spirit. I LOVE Christmas. I love the decorations and the lights and the music and the presents and the parties and the food and the traditions and the snow. All of it.

Since we started dating, Benjamin and I have spent every Christmas with my family. I have three siblings who I am very close to and countless family Christmas traditions that I adore, and since we live near Benjamin’s family and see them a lot more often throughout the rest of the year, it only seemed fair to give me my favorite holiday with my family. Over the last few years figuring out where to spend Christmas has gotten more and more complicated, as it always does when families expand. Now that we have Owen, my older sister has 2 kids, and my brother and his wife are due with their first baby on Christmas Eve, it seemed like a logical year to switch it up and spend Christmas in our own little house. Time to start some new traditions, I guess. While I am sad that I won’t be waking up with my family like usual, I am giddy with excitement to experience an intimate Christmas morning with just Benjamin and Owen (and Schnitzel, of course!). I know Owen won’t know the difference between Christmas or any other day this year, but there is something so special about waking him up in his little footie pajamas and watching his face in the glow of the twinkling lights on our tree. So precious.

Generally Benjamin and I have so many people to buy Christmas presents for (aka my big family) that we don’t really do presents for each other. But this year, since it will just be the two of us, we’ve decided to give each other something.

Do you know what I’m getting?

That’s right. My very own freezer to fill to my heart’s content with breastmilk and homemade baby food. Seriously, I’m so excited. Benjamin says that’s not my only present… but I’d be happy even if it was!

Benjamin is TOUGH to buy for. He never wants anything except expensive camera/video gear that I can’t pick out or afford. Hmmm.

I’m off to spend the rest of naptime unearthing our Christmas decorations! Can’t wait to put them up.

  1. So sweet! We have the same Christmas difficulties. I see my husband’s family all year since we live near them, but every year until this one we would spend Xmas eve with my family in RI and then drive down exhausted Chirstmas morning to spend with his family. This year we are spending BOTH in RI and I am THRILLED to not spend Christmas day driving!!!!!

  2. deep freezes are THE BEST! we keep our meat for a whole year in those things!!! this year i really wasnt into decorating; we put up our tree in 20 min flat while baby was asleep and other than lights on the porch i think that will be about it!

  3. I just put up our tree the other day and I love how festive it makes the whole house. Have fun decorating! (and enjoy the freezer too – I’m jealous!)

  4. Hi,
I’ve never commented on your blog before, but I’ve read for a while. I wanted to let you know that I have that same freezer! I LOVE IT. I tried something out with mine, and I LOVE that I did. It has made my life infinitely easier when it comes to food organization. Sometimes I curse it because I have to carefully grab something, but then I think about what the unit would look like without the grid… I’d be constantly digging around in cold, frozen food.

Anyway, here’s what it looks like:

If you search “coroplast” on my blog, you’ll come up with the post. I used coroplast, which is, essentially, plastic cardboard. It’s pretty easily cutable, and I glued it together with hot glue, which worked really well in the cold freezer.

I LOVE IT. I think there are 24 little cubbies, and I cut it out so there was room enough for my bins still on top. The bins hold the larger items— frozen chickens, usually. There is also 3-5″ on top of the grid for large items too, like pizzas.

Whew, long post. Just thought I’d share because I LOVE being able to open the freezer, look inside, and know exactly what I have. No pawing around!

  5. This may sound ridiculous, but I had no clue that you could get freezer like that! That sounds awesome and now I am going to start looking for one!

I love how HAPPY so many people are during the holidays. The spirit is infectious!

  6. I got a freezer a few months before Liam was born and I love mine! In addition to breasmilk, I like to spend one full Saturday cooking casseroles- I split each one into two servings, label each with the contents and cooking directions, then freeze them. I end up with 6-8 meals! I like to make big pots of soup and freeze that, too.

  7. I’ve been reading your blog from my friends “Our Stork Isn’t Great with Directions” and love your posts. I too LOVE, LOVE, LOVE Christmas and get so excited to get all the decorations and lights out too. Also, I’m way excited to get our Christmas gift – a freezer! It’s coming on Monday and I can’t wait. Thanks for all of your fun blog entries.
